Heel Height and Medial/Lateral Balance

Before trim find the plane of the heel walls.


Measure from the bottom of the collateral goove to rasp edge before trim on both left and right side of hoof.

Seek professional assistance if you are not skilled in reading and trimming hoof structure.
Trim the hoof wall.



After trim find the new plane of the heel walls.
After trim, measure from the bottom of the collateral groove to rasp edge on both left and right side of hoof.



Completed trim on a healthy hoof.

Even heel length. Both collateral grooves measure the same ideal depth.

Palpation of the digital cushion reveals healthy thick fibrocartilage.

Frog is full and level with the heals.

Solar (bottom) of hoof looks balanced for both medial/lateral (side to side) and anterior/posterior (front to back).
